Voter Registration

Troy Davis Update
Two weeks ago Troy Davis received a stay from the US Supreme Court. They were were expected to announce a decision today on his case but have not done so yet. Please pray for Troy, his family, the family of Officer McPhail, and the Supreme Court.
Local Sex Trafficking
Because of a state budget shortfall, the Regional Assessment Center for Prostituted Girls is one of the programs being recommended for elimination. Without action, the program will run out of funds in three months.

Candler Accessibility
Most of us experienced some inconvenience last week when the side door was blocked. Imagine the inconvenience and difficulty some persons deal with regularly regarding issues of accessibility. How can we improve the current state of affairs? One place to start is by listening to the concerns.

Donate Your Books
Oakhurst Recovery Program is collecting books for a fundraiser. The private inpatient drug treatment facility has one of the highest success rates in the region. SCN and Oakhurst Baptist member George Payne, is organizing the book sale. Please bring your used and new books to Brooks Commons. There is a box on the floor near the main bulletin board. Supported by Social Concerns Network.
Emory Sustainability Grants
The Office of Sustainability Initiatives is pleased to provide an Incentives Fund to support research, campus-based projects, and the development of new rituals to promote sustainability on Emory’s campuses. The deadline is Oct. 15th.

SCN Planning Meeting
Anyone interested in more extensive planning for Social Concerns Network are invited to meet from 12-1 on Tuesday Oct. 28th (Room TBA).
Campaign Against Torture
During Oct and Nov, SCN, Black Student Caucus, Candler Baptist Community, and other student organizations will be organizing several anti-torture events for awareness and action. On Oct. 29th Ghosts of Abu Ghraib will be shown.

Interfaith Children’s Movement Breakfast
Elizabeth Wilson will soon be inviting students to join the Candler Children’s Initiative in attending the Annual Call to Action Prayer Breakfast of the Interfaith Children’s Movement. This event will be held on Wednesday morning, Oct. 29th. The featured speaker is B. J. Bernstein, an Atlanta attorney well-versed in current Juvenile Justice law and an advocate for children. Most recently, she was the lead attorney in the Genarlow Wilson case.

Candler students have been invited by Maggie to join Columbia’s social action group at the School of the Americas Vigil/Protest. The event is Nov. 21-23. Housing will be available or you can go down for a day trip.
